In 1982, Alan Menken and Howard Ashman open a little shop off-Broadway… a Little Shop of Horrors! Based on a 60’s black-comedy of the same name, later spawning a movie musical with a cult following.
Following Seymour, a small town florist who encounters a “Mean, Green, Motha from Outer Space” the musical is filled with extraordinary characters, who can forget the sadistic dentist who meets his match in a masochistic patient? It seems Seymour bit off more than he could chew with Audrey II and we see him at first trying to appease his bloodthirsty plant and later watch him go to great lengths to rid himself and his friends of the interplanetary plant. Boy, the lengths we go through to get the girl.
So, come on in and mind Audrey II if you would (he’s a biter) and let me fix you a drink inspired by our man Seymour!
The Florist
1 ounce Rendle’s Gin
1 ounce Campari
¾ ounce Dolin Vermouth de Chambéry Rouge (sweet)
¼ ounce St-Germain Elderflower Liqueur
2 dashes black currant bitters
Stir over ice, serve in a rock glass, spritz rosewater on top and garnish with a flower petal.
And for the road, a call back to our favorite dentists despite his… unusual treatments
